AFRO Charities

AFRO Charities

The Afro-American Newspaper (The AFRO) is a historic Black newspaper in Baltimore City and its archives are the familial legacy of cultural organizer, Savannah Wood. In 2019 she began the work of revitalizing Afro Charities, the non-profit partner to the AFRO, by collaborating with local artists to create community programming, publications, exhibitions, and more. Savannah commissioned me to create an identity that reflects the new creative cultural work the organization is doing, while still honoring the AFRO’s history and its archives.

Process

Taking a typographic approach, we agreed to focus on sans serifs. I played with different motifs the AFRO used in the past, such as the wings and the globe. The piece that Savannah liked the most was a design from my sketches that incorporated an elongated ‘F’, like a stretch into the future. We refined it with some new colors she visioned, inspired by the color palettes of Maasai warriors.
